It was our first time in Hawaii and we decided to take the Road to Hana drive — we had no idea what was in store for us. It’s a beautiful drive to Hana with many opportunities to pull over and enjoy the view and waterfalls. Past Hana, heading to the Piilani Highway, was a different story, though. The scenery was still there, but the road was very narrow — for two cars to drive by each other — and mostly unpaved. We have to admit, it was a bit nerve-racking — hoping another car wouldn’t come around the corner, going the opposite direction. But we still were able to stop and enjoy the ocean scenery, and even found a cool, old church along the way.
